Waveney Valleys D Lake13 March 2010Four in a day session...
Following on from yesterdays result, I headed back for an early start, arriving around first light.
Straight away I parked the van in the swim, love it here at waveney as you can fish straight out of the van from most swims on the complex of lakes.
Anyway no time to waste, I started to get the rods ready. I normally like to get all the rods ready before casting, problem was I was gagging to get the a rod out first.
Chod rigs were the order of the day, so I tied a new hooklength on, then curved it and tied a dynamite fluoro orange tutti frutti pop up on.
I then had to change the 1 and 1/2 ounce square lead to a 3 and 1/2 ounce lead as I had a long cast slightly to my right at a range of around 95 yards to a far corner of the lake where they lay off a big old oak tree.
First cast was spot on so I slowly sunk the line, then I layed the rod down and pulled off around 5 ft off slack and set the clutch, just in case I had take while I was sorting the other rods out, but I always keep an eye on the rods while i do this as I often get bites quiet quickly.
I know the lake like the back off my hand after fishing the complex for over 25 years. I love fishing the place in the winter as I normally get around 90 to 100 most winters, plus it's nice to be near home, so I can come and go as i please!
Next rod goes straight out to an area behind a big gravel hump where its very silty but smooth.
So I changed the lead to a 2 ounce square lead this time as i was casting this running chod around 65 to 70 yards.
I slowly sunk the 20lb x line and then layed the rod down and set the clutch, as I did this I noticed the line on the other rod was tight so i quickly pulled into a slow moving cold water carp. As I played the carp, it came in quick telling me it was a good double and as I played it under the rod tip, it came up and I saw a nice mirror.
I then slipped the net under him and quickly unhooked the mirror, I do this alot as i like to get the rod back while he recovers abit.
Rod back out to the spot as once you locate them you can get another bite.
Cradle and unhooking matt sorted, bucket of lake water, camara, scales, weigh sling and fish care solution from thinking anlgers for any damage the carp may have.
Dave the fishery manager came over on do the pics for me.
Whilst I was getting the rod out I noticed a movement, christ that must of been a carp just poke his head out, you should always keep your eyes peeled for any signs from mr carp!
When I get a carp from an area I will normally put another rod near it because if you catch one from a spot then there are normally more about!
All rods out finally and now on buzzers. I decided to sit in the van and get warm by having the engine running for a bit with the heater on.
I then opened a tin of red bull and had a drink of energy before starting writing again.
I love sitting in the van with the tunes on while i write, just as I was sorting things out ready, I heard a few bleeps on my middle rod so i quickly legged it out, by then the rod was bent as the line was tight, all I needed to do was pull into the fish.
This time andy from the tackle shop came over to do the honours for me. This one weighed bang on 21lb, another cold water carp for uncle jim.
Rod back out and time to get some serious writing done, I am currently working on the horton chapter about my quest for the parrot.
As I was packing up before dark I got a single beep, so I went out to have a look, it was the long rod again to my right, I slowly pulled the slack line to see if i had a drop back or a fish kiting, I know theres a certain amount of slack line so as i gently pulled to much slack indicating a fish on, I then reeled the line back on my infinity and then pulled into another fish. This one shot down the right hand margin before i made contact with the fish which felf bigger. I had to bring him along my right hand margin and keep the rod well out to keep the line away from the tree which was just to my right.
This one weight 23.10 so it shows you what can happen when fishing the right venue and keeping some bait going in. 3 x 20s and a double in january!
I then packed up and before i headed home I spread another 2kg of choco malts over the areas for next time.
Gotta keep them feeding!
Until next time
Be lucky
Uncle Jim
