One of the Last Two Big Fish I Needed to Catch from G Lake.21 March 2010theres two thirties i want from G lake, one a linear and one being a common, which ive just had at 31lb.
Arriving at the lake just after first light. Thank god the lake was liquid. I quickly walked down to a corner to bait up with afew boilies, Plus alight scattering of my groundbait mix. Just enough bite for a bite, remember you can put it in but you can't take it out!!
Warmer conditions like spring you can add more bait, say double the amount from the above baiting levels I've just written down about. I also like to spread the bait about, say over an area 25ft by 25ft as i like to get the carp searching and
the more the fish move around looking for bait, the greater the chance the carp will get hooked up. Big edge when using the chod rig. Anyway with the swim baited, all I had to do next was get my fishing gear up to the point swim on G lake asap. Barrow was loaded with all the gear i would need for a few nights. As I was getting the rods ready, the wind started to blow from an easterly direction. the sky was clear so it would be sunny but the area i will casting too was flat calm, so it would be a sun trap. A good area for a day bite!. So 3 rods will be fanned around this area and the 4th fished 30 yards away in a very silty area of the lake. If I got a bite here i would move one of my other rods near the bite zone because if you catch one fish from an area there's normally others close by. I got all the rods ready first. I then cast them all out at the same time, this cuts down the noise over a long period, what I mean, 4 rods cast at same time, would take say 5 mins but 4 rods cast out as you get each rod ready would take at least 30 to 40 mins, so that's why I like to get them out in one hit. Rods out on the zones! all I had to do now was get the home setup. Pukka all sorted now, only thing i need now is mr carp. Time to get writing again, as I've got to get this book written in the next 2 years. Around two hours later, I got a single bleep from my middle left hand rod, this normally happens with the long running chod rig setup, one or more bleeps, then the line pulls tight. as I have the rod tips set high up?, because i let the rod load and hook the carp for me on the mega slack lines I use when chodding. Within a split second the buzzer bursts into life as the line pulls tight. All I have to do is gently pull into the carp as the rod has hooked him for me, you must make sure the clutch is set just right, as you don't want to loose your rod, plus you want it tight enough to hook the fish, best way is to mimic a take until you get the balance just right...this fish shot off on a mental run, like most do in here! As he came across the lake to my margin. I played him out under the rod tip and a few mins later, there's was a lovely looking mirror in the net. I phoned russ up to see if he could do the pics for me. while i waited for him i unhooked the carp and weighed him, he went 24lb.
I then put him back in the landing net until russ arrived, it also gives the carp a bit of time to recover, something I do alot.. New chod and bait tiedon. I then cast it back to the zone. I then fired out a few more choco malts with the throwing stick over the whole area because if I've caught one you can guarantee most of the bait has been eaten. Not long after the last fish, I had another savage take that fought like a demon!!,running me all over the lake, indicating that it was one of better ones that inhabit the lake, by the way the rod was bent over! After about 8 mins he was in my margin, trying to get rid of the size 5 hook he had in his mouth, as he was shaking his head a lot through the fight, not to worry as a few mins later he was sitting in the bottom of my net.
Nothing else happened through the rest of the day light hours. But around 9pm whilst watching the predator on my DVD player, I had another take which resulted in a pop eyed mirror of 23.8, another one I hadn't caught before. As so often happens here on G lake they go all moody after you caught one or two. So nothing the next day so I decided to go home early for some brownie points!!! Springs arrived finally so time to move on to my big fish waters so I am going straight back to my cambs syndicate water chasing a rather tricky massive common! Dynamites choco malts are rocking well for me, so my confidence is sky high, just need a real biggun now... Until next time. be lucky. Uncle Jim KIR Gallery:
